Not Sure What to Write? 5 Journal Prompts to Get You Started

Sometimes the hardest thing about journaling isn't finding the time- it's knowing where to begin. Staring at a blank page can feel surprisingly daunting, especially when you have plenty of thoughts but don't know how to put them into words.

If you've ever opened a notebook and wondered, "What am I actually supposed to write?", you're definitely not alone. These five simple journal prompts are designed to help get your thoughts moving, overcome writer's block and make it easier to settle into a natural writing rhythm.

1) What's been on your mind lately?

When your head is full of thoughts, ideas, plans or worries, it can be hard to know which one to focus on first. Rather than trying to organise everything, start by simply getting your thoughts onto the page.

Write whatever comes to mind, without worrying about grammar, structure or whether it sounds "right". Don't edit yourself as you go- just let the words come naturally. You may find that once you start writing, your thoughts become clearer and you discover what's really been occupying your mind.

2) Is there something you've been avoiding?

Think about something you've been meaning to do but keep putting off. It could be an everyday task, a decision you've been avoiding, or something you've been wanting to make time for.

Write about what it is and, most importantly, why you've been avoiding it. Is it because it feels overwhelming? Are you unsure where to start? Or have other things simply kept getting in the way?

Putting it into words can make something feel less daunting and may even help you work out your next small step.

3) What are three little things you've enjoyed recently?

Your answer doesn't need to include anything particularly exciting or memorable. Perhaps you enjoyed your morning coffee, had a good conversation, spotted something beautiful on a walk or simply had a few peaceful minutes to yourself.

Take a moment to think about the small things that have made you happy recently and write them down. It's an easy way to pause and appreciate everyday moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

4) What would you tell your past self?

Imagine you could sit down with yourself from a year ago. What would you want them to know?

Think about what you've learned, how you've changed and what you understand now that you didn't then. Is there something you wish you'd worried about less? A lesson you learned along the way? Or perhaps something you wish you'd had the confidence to do sooner?

Write it as a letter to your past self, or simply jot down whatever comes to mind. Looking back can be a great reminder of just how much can change over the course of a year.

5) What would you like the month ahead to look like?

Now turn your attention towards the next few weeks. Is there anything you'd like to achieve, experience or make more time for?

It could be a personal goal, a new hobby, time with friends and family, a project you've been putting off or simply more time to relax. Your plans don't need to be ambitious or perfectly organised.

Make a list of a few things you'd like your month to include. Think of it less as a strict to-do list and more as an opportunity to consider how you'd like to spend your time.

Ready to start writing?

You don't need to have the perfect words or a carefully planned entry to begin journaling. Sometimes, all it takes is a quiet moment, an interesting prompt and a notebook that's ready to hold your thoughts.
