Yard-O-Led

Yard O Led have been hand crafted fine pens and pencils in England since 1822 and is one of the world’s leading writing instrument manufacturers.

Their story began in 1822 when Sampson Mordan, along with Michael Faraday patented the world’s first propelling pencil, a patent that would later be bought by Edward Baker & Company who were based in Birmingham. In the early 20^th Century Ludwig Brenner came over from Germany and established a gold and silversmith based in London. Here he created a self-propelling pencil that was capable of holding twelve three-inch leads, the iconic ‘Yard O Led’. Brenner then went into business with Samspon Mordan’s son, Frank Tuffnel, founding the Yard O Led company in 1934.

After he Second World War the company found new premises in Birmingham, the same space that the company operates out of today. Then in the 1950’s Yard O Led acquired and merged with Edward Baker, obtaining the famous Mordan patents.
