The Fladgate Partnership

The Fladgate Partnership is following in its tradition and has announced on St. Georges Day that it will bottle 2008 Vintage Ports from Taylors Quinta de Vargellas, Croft's Quinta da Roêda and Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage making the bicentenary of the company's foundation in 1815. Adrian Bridge the managing director of The Fladgate Partnership announced the release that the 2008 harvest has produced excellent but distinctly different wines.

The 2008 harvest produced an excellent bottle of vintage port which shows all the balance and elegance that are the hallmarks of the property. Although the 2008’s are already expressive and appealing on the nose, they also have the structure and completeness to allow them to hold up extremely well in the bottle.

The condition of the crop was exceptionally healthy throughout 2008, despite the dry year meaning the yields were relatively low the tannins were very robust and ensured that the crop remained completely free of disease. So with a hot summer and a dry winter, fortunately October and November ensured the vines had enough rain fall. The picking of the ripened harvest started early on the 7th September after a very hot early summer resulting in 40°C temperatures at Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta da Roêda and ended on the 3rd October. The year will be remembered for the perfect condition of the grapes picked.

Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas 2008 Vintage Port Tasting Notes:

A deep ruby-black core with purple-red rim, the nose, fine, elegant and poised. Infused with a plummy freshness and hints of citrus and fresh quince. Hints of nutmeg, anise and cacao emerge from behind the fruitiness. The classic Vargellas floral scent is more reminiscent of jasmine than the signature violet. Typical of Vargellas, the palate is supported by taut, sinewy tannins and the grippy finish delivers a
burst of clean, fresh berry fruit flavour.

Fonseca Quinta do Pascal 2008 Vintage Port Tasting Notes:

Opaque purple colour with narrow violet rim. The nose opens with an unrestrained surge of dense concentrated cassis and black cherry laced with a sumptuous confection of molasses and dark chocolate. As it develops, notes of damson and plum emerge from the seemingly impenetrable layer of dark berry fruit followed by heady scents of aromatic herbs and exotic notes of black pepper and sandalwood. On the palate the wine's rich luscious fruitiness combines with the close-grained and wonderfully integrated tannins to produce an unrestrained eruption of texture and flavour. The opulent black fruit flavours are seemingly endless and are lifted by a zesty freshness on the finish.

Croft Quinta Da Roêda 2008 Vintage Port Tasting Notes:

An intense purple-black centre surrounded with a magenta rim. The nose made up of a plump, rich dark berry compote infused with exotic notes of ripe tropical fruit and subtle amount of wild herbs. Warm notes of dark chocolate, liquorice and spices contribute to the opulent character. The palate is smooth and round full of richness and jammy flavour with a silky texture which conceals the firm well-knit tannins which emerge on the finish.
